4/28/2019 RHINO Poetry Forum: Workshop with Maya Marshall

Workshop: Marilyn Nelson and a long lineage of poets of witness, including the master persona writer Ai, include and encourage in their work a practice of empathy. Central to that practice is close, active listening and intentional representation. Our project will be to write new work in the persona form. Each participant will listen closely to a peer and then, with their own style, write the poem in the peer’s voice.

Maya Marshall is an editor and a poet. She is co-founder of the revision journal underbellymag.com. Marshall has earned fellowships from Vermont Studio Center, Callaloo, Cave Canem, the Community of Writers, and The Watering Hole.
